Tantalum is a unique metal used in many specialist applications. Its resistivity to chemicals and its high melting point make it a desirable choice for chemical plant equipment and a host of high-tech manufacturing applications.Its electrical properties make it a top choice for the production of high performance capacitors in retail electronics, aerospace, and automotive manufacturing.
Other uses include as an ingredient in specialist alloys for such things as turbine blades and in medical implants due to it being exceptionally inert in biological environments.
Titanium is another unique metal which has some excellent properties for manufacturers and engineers to harness.
Being as strong as steel but only 60% of the weight it has a wide variety of uses from aerospace to golf clubs.
Its high temperature resistance also makes it a premium choice for spacecraft materials, crucibles, and a wide range of industrial plant equipment.
Titanium is also highly resistant to corrosion so is often used in marine applications and desalination processes.
In its oxide form, and by far the biggest use of titanium, it is use as a pigment in paints, plastics and papers.
Being biologically inert it is also used in medical implants and as an ingredient in sunscreen to block UV light whilst remaining transparent on the skin.
The vast majority of niobium is utilised in stainless steel alloys where just small amounts substantially improve the material strength, particularly in low temperature applications. It also has superconducting properties and is used in superconducting magnets for particle accelerators, MRI scanners and NMR equipment.
In its oxide form niobium is added to glass to allow lenses to be manufactured much thinner without losing the refractive properties.
Niobium is also used in the aerospace industry for turbine blade alloys, amongst other things, as well as the electronics industry for capacitors although much less commonly than tantalum.
